My Experience with TMD

Updated: Mar 15, 2021

I know firsthand what it feels like to deal with years of TMJ pain. There were times when I began to lose hope that the pain would ever truly go away. Then I found Lynch Physical Therapy.

I'm Lauren Guest, one of the therapists at Lynch Physical Therapy who specializes in the treatment of both TMD and Pelvic Rehab.

I personally started experiencing bilateral TMJ pain following some orthodontic work 15 years ago. It began with slight popping and clicking in the joint accompanied by pain. The pain elevated and I noticed my jaw would sublux daily and cause severe headaches. Discomfort became so acute, I spent much of my time on an all soft food diet. Jaw pain is very debilitating as we require the use of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) when eating, breathing and speaking...all important motions of daily life. Desperately seeking treatment over the years from various avenues including a chiropractor, licensed massage therapist, oral and facial pain specialist, oral surgeon and dentist, I eventually stumbled upon Lynch Physical Therapy.

Even with my experience working as a therapist, I was unfamiliar with physical therapy as an option for the treatment of TMJ pain. Within a few sessions at Lynch Physical Therapy my pain had significantly decreased and I was eating normally again. I was immediately intrigued at my first visit and wanted to learn the specialized treatments of TMD so I could help others who are suffering as I had for many years. Shortly after my treatment ended, I began extensive training under direct supervision of owner, Ryan Lynch. I felt privileged to be able to train with one of only three Certified Cervical and Temporomandibular Therapists in the state of Maryland. I am extremely excited to be a part of this therapy team as I can personally relate to the struggles of jaw pain. I love having the opportunity to help others recover as well as spreading the word that TMD physical therapy works!

A little more about me

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the AACC CACHE PTA program. While working as a physical therapy assistant, I have gained experience in outpatient orthopedic and skilled nursing settings, treating a variety of patients from pediatric through geriatric populations. Additionally, I have spent time in both traditional land and aquatic rehabilitation. I continue to enjoy giving back to the CACHE program by mentoring PTA students. I'm currently training for competitive women’s powerlifting, adding my extensive knowledge of weight training to my work as a therapist. Furthermore, I have advanced my treatment skills in pelvic floor rehab.

Whether you are currently undergoing treatment in the office by me, or another therapist, feel free to stop me in the hall and ask any questions. I'm happy to share more about my TMD experience and journey to healing.
